Skyrim is one engaging role playing game where you, the user, would be lost in a world of make believe if not for the empowering skyrim skills. It works on the simple concept of accepting quests to progress further. Of course, the player has the option of not accepting the quest if he does not have the requisite skills, but taking them up is the only way to prevent the impending destruction of the world by the Dragon god.

Skyrim skills – survival and success painted in broad strokes

There are eighteen Skyrim skills, and as one progresses through the various levels of quests, one discovers how each of them comes useful as the non-playing characters (NPCs) throw challenges and quests at the players. Interaction with these characters is possible, and it is useful because it allows the player to discover new skills or make friends with the NPCs. When this happens, it could prove to be an advantage during combat.

Since being prepared for all kinds of quests and handling even the more unconventional of the quests is the name of the game, survival skills as well as a scheming bent of mind is necessary for making the path to Alduin slightly easier.

Skyrim skills – where they come handy

Skyrim skills are broadly classified into three categories: Magic, Stealth and Combat. While it may seem that combat is directly necessary in survival, so are stealth and combat. They are of great use while moving through various stages of quests. One by one, as a player aces each of these skills, he has achievement levels and labels such as ‘thief’ when he has achieved, say, 50 pickpocket and 50 lock picking jobs.

Skills such as persuasion, sneaking, alchemy, bribing or downright intimidating tactics, are also highly sought after, and a player who has done these jobs par excellence can be called a Snake Tongue. Combat skills include single-handed, double handed combat, smithing, blocking and archery. Each skill needs practice and the NPC might assign the player some skill tests or ask for some favors to be done. Acing a skill brings its own perks with it, and these skills are extremely handy when one progresses to the advanced stages. In addition to gaining perks per skill, there is also a chance to gain a perk point each time the player advances by a stage.

Skyrim skills – perks and other changes over time

Unlocking a perk can unleash greater possibilities for the player. However, there is a catch in that perks once used up cannot be brought back, and therefore, these are to be exhausted only when needed. Training skills are also available for each level and they help in increasing the character’s potential.

Skills and perks in Skyrim have changed over time, and ‘speech’ is one of the recent additions. There are no classes, however, so it is no longer necessary to differentiate between major and minor skills, as they were before. There are skill books to be read by the player, so it can be a good thing to read as many books as possible and gain the title of a ‘reader’ – someone who has read at least 50 skill books.
